TESOL COURSE

Due to changing requirements, TESOL is the more sought after certification course that is required for teaching English abroad. Although TEFL courses are still offered around the world, many foreign countries are requiring prospective students to have done the TESOL course as a standard requirement.

Our course will further prepare you, if you so wish, to do the TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) which is a certificate issued by Cambridge University. Further info: see TKT .

The TESOL course is designed to introduce teachers to lesson plans, efficient teaching methods and classroom management.

Due to a huge and ongoing demand for TEFL/TESOL teachers many people of all ages are doing these courses to enable them to teach internationally.

Our comprehensive 120-hour theoretical and practical skills development course in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) takes place once a month.

The course has three components: intensive classroom-based sessions (first week), observation/teaching practice (second week), home study/research and assignments (third week).

Final assessment for this component comes from the combined trainee and facilitator session assessments for the week.

Course participants will be supplied with a manual which consolidates concepts covered on the course and students are encouraged to keep their own notes during the course. Good English Grammar and Teaching books are discussed during the course. A list of recommended books is included in the information package as well as a DVD with TESOL resource materials.

COURSE ASSESSMENT

We require candidates to meet the high standards of the course, and we evaluate course participants in three ways:

  • Course participation
  • Attendance and level of course participation are recorded and assessed by the trainer.

  • Project
  • Candidates are required to submit a lesson planning project, complete an assignment and will receive continual feedback assessment on all tasks

  • Observation and teaching practice
  • This would take place at our language school, in an authentic teaching environment. This component provides the opportunity for self assessment while teaching, under the guidance of the course facilitator. Assessment is continuous during the practical sessions.

Course participants who receive positive feedback and assessments on all three points will receive a certificate indicating a grading of the candidate's performance in each area.

When a candidate does not meet the criteria or is struggling in any area of assessment, the course trainer will assist with further input and practice. Modules may need to be redone or additional practice will be arranged. As the course trainer works closely with all participants and monitors each participant's progress from the beginning, there is plenty of time to work on any areas needing improving.

    REFERENCE
    December 2011

I completed my course with Matthew Van As who lectured, coordinated and administered the TESOL course at the Cape Town Training Institute. I found myself in the most fortunate position during this time to be a willing participant on this course.  As an educator I began my TESOL training with some apprehension (as I am sure did most of my fellow classmates) but within the first quarter of an hour of the introduction I felt both comfortable and excited.

Matthew's ability to engage a potentially difficult class of adults was approached with an effortless confidence that I know infused everyone sitting in his classroom with an equal sense of confidence and purpose. His teaching style and methodologies are well prepared and thought out often making complex concepts easy to digest regardless of how late in the evening it may be. I can recall many occasions where the methodology caught me by surprise and assisted in my own absorption of the course material.

Matthew remained professional throughout, always ready with a joke or a smile when energy levels dropped, for me, this speaks volumes about his character as a professional educator while being equally balanced in his natural approachability and mentoring style.

I highly recommend this TESOL course at the Cape Town Training Institute and this is purely based on the fact that Matthew was running this programme. I shall be happy to provide any further information.
